Gap Cover

In their efforts to control expenditure on claims all medical schemes apply various measures e.g.:

• a tariff is fixed that often fall short of the tariff that the doctors and other providers charge.
• a limit is placed on the use of certain services such as scans, specialised radiology, diagnostic scopes and dental surgery.
• a cap is placed on the coverage for prosthesis and prosthetic devices like stents, joints, pace makers and neuro stimulators.
• co-payments are demanded for elective procedures such as joint replacements, back treatments, gastroscopies and other scopes.
• the use of biological medicines in the treatment of cancer is either not covered or limited.

The effect of all these measures is that, after an hospital event, you are very likely going to end up with many accounts that the medical scheme did not cover. That often comes as a rude shock to medical scheme members. However, there is a solution. Gap cover is available as a separate product. Various options are available, each designed to compliment specific medical scheme plans.

Tax Rebates

Tax treatment of medical aid and related medical expenses.

Tax payers are classified in 3 categories to determine the tax relieve afforded to the taxpayer.

• Older than 65 years
• Disabled persons. Either the taxpayer or a dependant will qualify for relief.
• All other taxpayers.

The tax concessions granted are a mixed bag of tax credits and deductibles. The definition of disability and what constitutes allowable expenses can be complicated. Consult the experts to fully utilize the concessions offered by the Receiver.
